【Balanced Madrid Tradition— Refined Power and Elegant Restraint】
[Luthier]
Lorenzo Álvarez Gil (b. 1928) was born in Bullas, Murcia, and later established his career in Madrid. He is the elder brother of luthier Juan Álvarez, and both were part of the vibrant Madrid guitar-making scene of the mid-20th century.
According to José Luis Romanillos, Lorenzo built his first guitar in collaboration with metalworker Teodoro Moreno, before fully dedicating himself to lutherie. Both brothers are also said to have received important guidance from Marcelo Barbero I, inheriting elements of the Santos Hernández tradition.
Lorenzo’s work reflects a well-balanced synthesis of Madrid influences of the 1960s, particularly the legacy of José Ramírez, combined with earlier Spanish traditions. His guitars are known for their musical versatility, refined character, and a highly balanced tonal approach.
[Instrument]
This is a 1985 guitar by Lorenzo Álvarez, offered in used but well-preserved condition. Although currently fitted with a golpeador, it was likely originally built as a classical model.
The sound is distinctly Madrid in character—rich, warm, and well-grounded. A deep and rounded bass supports clear, focused trebles, creating a natural and cohesive tonal balance. Compared to the more percussive response often associated with Ramírez-style guitars, this instrument offers a more flexible, elastic response, with smooth articulation and a refined tonal texture.
The voice is elegant and controlled, with moderate overtones, avoiding excessive brightness while still delivering sufficient volume. Its strength lies in its balance—never exaggerated, yet consistently musical and expressive.
The bracing follows a traditional Spanish pattern with seven fan struts and harmonic bars, contributing to its stable and mature tonal character. The resonance is set slightly above F#, adding clarity and focus to the overall sound.
Condition is very good, with no major cracks or structural repairs. Minor playing wear is visible on the top, particularly around the soundhole and golpeador edges, while the back, sides, and neck remain clean. The neck is slightly forward but within standard setup, and playability is comfortable. Tuners have been replaced with Gotoh machines.
A fine example of Madrid craftsmanship—offering understated elegance, balance, and musical depth.
