[Profile]
Born in Madrid, Spain, in 1931, Arcángel Fernández initially dreamed of becoming a film actor and even appeared in several movies during his youth. However, at the age of 13, he began working as a furniture maker and simultaneously developed a passion for flamenco guitar. His musical talent blossomed quickly, and after completing his military service, he sought a professional career as a guitarist. In 1954, Arcángel crossed paths with the renowned luthier Marcelo Barbero I (1904-1956), who was considered the successor to Santos Hernández. Under Barbero’s guidance, Arcángel was encouraged to pursue guitar-making, eventually becoming Barbero’s only disciple.

While balancing both playing and crafting guitars, Arcángel’s exceptional woodworking skills, honed through his furniture-making background, and his curiosity for the tonal aspects of guitar construction drove him to master the craft at an extraordinary pace. In a short period, he became a trusted assistant to Barbero. Sadly, in 1956, Barbero passed away at just 52 years old. After learning from him for only two years, Arcángel took over the remaining orders from Barbero and, in 1957, opened his own workshop on Jesús y María Street near his mentor’s old workshop. Later, Barbero’s son, Marcelo Barbero II (1943-2005), joined him, and together they continued building guitars.

Arcángel Fernández’s approach to craftsmanship is uncompromising, particularly in the selection of materials and the pursuit of perfect tone. His guitars, with their unmatched precision and depth, demand a high level of technical mastery from the performer. Because of their exceptional quality and difficulty to play, his instruments have continually inspired guitarists around the world. Arcángel retired from guitar-making in 2011, and his instruments have since become increasingly rare, making them one of the most sought-after brands today.

[Description]
This 1962 Flamenco Guitar by Arcángel Fernández features a rare and distinctive Coralwood back and sides, setting it apart from typical instruments of this prestigious brand. The guitar has been refinished with lacquer, maintaining its original charm while ensuring durability. On the soundboard, there is a repaired crack on the treble side of the soundhole, approximately 10 cm long, with internal patch reinforcement. Despite this minor restoration, the guitar remains an exceptional instrument, offering the remarkable sound and high craftsmanship typical of Arcángel Fernández's legacy.
