[Luthier Information]
Kiyohide Shoji was born in 1952 in Kochi Prefecture, Japan. At the age of 16, he studied classical guitar performance under guitarist Hiroyoshi Onishi, and began building guitars at the age of 25. He currently operates a workshop in Higashiyodogawa, Osaka.
In addition to his work as a luthier, he has been actively involved in educating the next generation. He previously taught a guitar-making course at Osaka College of Music (now closed) and continues to run guitar-building classes for the general public at his own workshop. Alongside standard six-string guitars, he also builds ten-string guitars.
[Instrument Information]
This is a JSS No.367, built in 2018, featuring a short scale length of 630 mm.
The guitar is characterized by an elegant and bright tonal quality. While the overall volume is moderate, it responds quickly and offers good sustain. The balance across the registers is excellent, producing a calm and well-controlled resonance that feels especially balanced close to the player. Despite its brightness, the sound has a soft, rounded character with a gentle sense of projection—an aspect that can be described as particularly appealing to Japanese tonal preferences.
The instrument features a lacquer finish and is fitted with Sloane tuning machines. The neck is slightly thinner than standard, straight, and provides comfortable playability. There is almost no fret wear. The string height is set to 3.0 mm on the 1st string and 4.0 mm on the 6th string. The string tension feels soft, and the wide tolerance to touch makes the guitar easy and forgiving to play.
Approximately six years have passed since its construction, and the guitar remains in overall good condition. There are fine surface scratches across the top, consistent with normal use, but they do not significantly detract from the appearance. There is some finish deterioration near the center of the back, though this does not affect playability. There are no cracks or repair history, and the instrument is in good condition. A Super Light Case is included.
