Paul Fischer was born in 1941 in the United Kingdom and grew up in Oxford, where he later established his own workshop. He studied harpsichord making under Robert Goble and developed extensive knowledge of other instruments, gaining a reputation as an intellectually accomplished luthier well-versed in European traditions.

From 1969, he worked in the workshop of the renowned British luthier David José Rubio, eventually serving as master craftsman with the privilege of stamping guitars with the PF initials. In 1975, Fischer founded his own workshop. Initially following Rubio’s structural designs, he later applied his accumulated expertise and scientific approach—refined through studies at Oxford University—to explore the relationship between sound and guitar construction. This led him to develop unique bracing patterns, producing instruments with highly refined tonal qualities, exceptional balance, and distinctive articulation. His guitars have been widely praised by professional guitarists for their acoustic precision and are considered among the most successful classical guitar brands of the late 20th century.

This is a 1998 Paul Fischer Alto Guitar, No. 968, used. It embodies the high-spec features of Fischer’s flagship models, the Conservatoire and Virtuoso, delivering a highly refined alto guitar. Standard tuning for this alto is B, E, A, D, F♯, B, but it can also be adapted to requinto tuning (A, D, G, C, E, A). Ideal for guitar orchestras or performances of traditional and folk music.

The top has two repaired cracks, each properly reinforced internally with plates, ensuring no issues for continued use. The neck remains straight, frets are largely unworn, and the German-made high-end Leichsel tuning machines function perfectly. Comes with a dedicated hard case.
