[Profile]
Born in Graz, Austria in 1940, he began his apprenticeship with string instrument builder Jakob Doriath in 1954 and quickly rose to prominence, earning the title of Meister of Strings and Percussion in 1961. In 1985, he was selected as one of the 10 best string instrument makers in the world, and his precision workmanship and well-balanced acoustics earned him an international reputation.
In 1989, he began teaching at the violin-making school in Mittenwald, Germany, and in 1992 at the University of Hallstatt, Austria.
After losing the fingertips of his left hand in an accident in the mid-1980s, he limited the number of instruments he made. Although he continued to do excellent work, the workshop was closed in 2010.
During his career, he has developed a truly extensive and vigorous production, and has produced a number of excellent apprentices in different genres, including Hermann Hauser III, Fritz Ober, and Edmund Blochinger in classical guitar.

[Description]
We are pleased to announce the arrival of Helmut Buchsteiner's No. 64, made in 1980. The label says Neumarkt St.Veit, and it was made in Neumarkt, Bavaria, where his workshop was located at that time. The appearance of this model is orthodox and original, although the so-called Weissgerber model with an oval soundhole is especially famous among his models. The sound is rigid and each note is dense and homogeneous, with a German essence as typified by Hauser. The sound may seem a bit inorganic when played as a single note alone, but when turned into a music piece, the transparency of the sound is maintained, and the variety of expressions that it produces is truly remarkable. The sound is powerful and has sufficient amplitude of dynamics.
There are some minor scratches around the soundhole, but the overall level of dents and scuff marks is commensurate with the age of the instrument. This is a fine example of the stoic appearance of the maker who produced the Weissgerber model and became a guide for Hauser III, with rich ideas and exquisite workmanship in every corner.
